Sunflower Lecithin or Choline for Plugged Ducts
Plugged ducts are local areas of inflammation in the breast which squeezes the milk ducts and makes it difficult for milk to flow. Treatment should focus on reducing the inflammation so that milk can flow.
Choline is a precursor to lecithin which supports fat transport and reduces inflammation. There are noo known side effects with standard dosing (550mg daily for pregnant/lactation).
Sunflower lecithin is considered to work by “emulsifying” breast milk to mix fats and help milk flow, but no high quality data exists to support this. It is a dietary precursor to choline and there is risk of GI inflammation and disruption in microbiome.
✅ Given sunflower lecithin’s possible risks and limited evidence of efficacy, I recommend a daily 550mg choline supplement for general support and sunflower lecithin only to be used for acute inflammation (1-2 days, stop if causing GI effects) but should not be relied on for long term support. ✅
If plugged ducts continue to occur, consider further evaluation for underlying causes like oral tension or ties, breast dysbiosis, etc.
