Birth Control While Breastfeeding

There are so many birth control options to choose from, and the last thing you may have time to think about postpartum is how to prevent a future pregnancy! All methods of birth control are safe for breastfeeding, but there are some that are less preferred due to their potential to reduce the milk supply. I recommend you discuss your options with a trusted care provider, but here are some good options to look into:

๐Ÿคฑ๐Ÿป Lactation Amenorrhea Method (LAM) - This method is 98% effective at preventing pregnancy IF your baby is less than 6 months old, you are exclusively breastfeeding, and your period has not yet returned.

๐Ÿ’Š Progestin-only pill (aka the โ€œmini-pill) - Unlike combination birth control, this method does not contain estrogen, which may reduce milk supply. The mini-pill must be taken everyday at the same time to be effective.

๐Ÿ’‰ Progestin-implant (aka Nexplanon) - The implant is very effective and lasts up to 5 years. It may not be the best option if you would like to get pregnant again sooner rather than later, as a doctor needs to both insert and remove it.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธHormonal or copper IUDs - IUDs are extremely effective. They can last up to 12 years and require a doctor to insert and remove them.

๐Ÿ›‘ Barrier methods - These methods include condoms, cervical caps, diaphragms, etc. They are easy to access and affordable, but they must be used consistently and correctly to be effective.
