Safe Formula Preparation
Almost 75% of babies are fed formula at some point in their first year, yet many people are not aware of how to safely prepare powdered formula.
Powdered formula is not sterile and bacteria like Cronobacter can contaminate the formula and cause serious sickness. To reduce bacterial contamination especially for newborns, preemies, and babies with compromised immune systems, water should be heated to boiling then allowed to cool for about 5 minutes before adding to formula. While this step may not be necessary for older healthy babies, this is always the safest way to prepare formula!
Step 1: Wash hands!
Step 2: Boil water then let it sit until 158 degrees (about 5 minutes).
Step 2: Add water to bottle.
Step 3: Add formula amount based on manufacturer recommendations.
Step 4: Shake to mix or stir with a clean utensil. While shaking reduces likelihood of bacteria from the stirring utensil, it can also create air bubbles and a frothy texture.
Step 5: All done! Use within 2 hours of preparing (24 hours if in fridge) or 1 hour within start of the feed.
