Can Silicone Flanges Reduce Supply?
I get it, those silicone inserts and flanges look really comfy in theory, but did you know that for the majority of parents they do not remove milk as effectively and can lead to a decrease in supply?
Silicone Inserts
More affordable
Can purchase a variety to size
Needs a LOT of lubrication as nipple does not easily glide on silicone
Often are not as effective at removing milk
May be useful for elastic nipples (but often “elastic nipples” are just incorrectly sized)
Hard Plastic Flanges
More expensive
A variety of shapes available to accomodate different breasts
Often more effective at removing milk and maintaining/increasing supply
I always recommend clients start with a flange fitting appointment with hard plastic flanges and if we find those are ineffective or uncomfortable, we try others like LacTeck, Pumpin Pals, or silicone inserts.
*Side note* this is another reason why wearables are often ineffective for so many parents as inserts are the only way to size up or down.
I have to give a shoutout to Jeanette with Babies In Common who has taught me so much about this, if you want more information on flange sizing check out her page.
