Caffeine and Breastfeeding

Caffeine is a central nervous stimulant, with about 1.5% of the caffeine consumed by the breastfeeding parent making its way to breast milk. Studies are limited, but reports of adverse effects in infants (ex. jitteriness, irritability) are mostly limited to parents who consume significant amounts (ex. 10+ cups of coffee) daily.

Current guidelines recommend no more than 3-0mg daily (ex. 2-3 cuips of coffee), wich more caution with premature infants and newborns.

Moderate caffeine consumption is considered safe while breastfeeding, although extra precautions may be necessary with premature infants or newborns. As infants grow, they become more capable of metabolizing caffeine without negative impacts.
