Breastfeeding During Pregnancy

In general, it is safe to breastfeeding throughout your pregnancy. There may be some situations, like a history of preterm labor, that may make your health care provider recommend to wean before becoming pregnant.

Benefits of breastfeeding while pregnant include providing the nutritional benefits of breast milk, it can be a source of emotional stability for both you and your child as you navigate the transition of adding another child to the family, and can help to regulate milk supply after giving birth. Many parents experience sore nipples, reduction in milk supply, and a saltier taste in milk as it transitions to colostrum that their older nursling may or may not prefer.

Strategies to manage nursing while pregnant:

  • Deep breathing to help with nipple pain

  • Staying hydrated

  • Eating frequent, balanced meals

  • Placing loving and realistic boundaries that respect both you and your child’s needs (ex. nursing only at specific times)

If you continue breastfeeding after giving birth, your body will prioritize your newborn and make milk that meets their nutritional needs. The milk is completely safe and healthy for both your newborn and older child.
